About PIPA

The Pharmaceutical Information and Pharmacovigilance Association (PIPA) exists to support and assist its members in the development of their professional skills and responsibilities. PIPA is the professional organisation for individuals who are involved in the provision and management of information and those involved in the fulfillment of regulatory requirements relating to drug safety.

During the early 1970's information officers within the UK pharmaceutical industry identified areas of common interest and became increasingly aware of the need to exchange ideas and experiences to further their professional development.

PIPA Today

PIPA is the professional organisation for individuals in the pharmaceutical industry involved in the provision and management of information. The association was formed in 1974 and now represents over 800 members who work in a variety of pharmaceutical information management roles, such as medical information, pharmacovigilance, scientific research information and business information. A growing number of members come from pharmaceutical companies outside the UK and from agencies, consultancies and service providers.

Our aims are:

  • to provide a forum for the exchange of experience and the advancement of all aspects of medical, scientific, and technical information handling relating to the pharmaceutical industry
  • to facilitate friendly communication amongst those who have a special interest in this subject
  • to encourage the maintenance and development of professional standards in all aspects of information and pharmacovigilance work
  • to encourage and facilitate the development of relevant skills and their application to information and pharmacovigilance work
  • to promote the professions within the pharmaceutical industry and to other professional and trade associations

We organise a range of different activities to achieve these aims:

PIPELINE

Published six times a year, the newsletter features relevant articles, PIPA news and includes advertising from information suppliers and career opportunities.

Meetings Programme

Our current meetings programme aims to deliver at least one meeting every two months. These take the form of formal, one day meetings and our popular half-day forums. Forum meetings enable smaller groups of up to 20 members to discuss and debate current issues.

Annual Conference, Exhibition and AGM

Each year in July we hold a two-day conference which also includes the AGM. Alongside the conference is a large exhibition of service providers.

Special Interest Groups and Working Parties

We form working parties and special interest groups to develop new projects and to focus on specific areas of interest. Current groups include Standards in Medical Information, Training the PIPA-UKMi Liaison Group.
